I see Rooney and others think Gabriel should have been sent off for the kick to Martinez's head. I think that's harsh.

All well and good saying that when looking at it in slow motion,,, but it was a pile of bodies and happened very quickly. He was clearly trying to kick the ball and given they were lying on the floor in a heap it makes controlling ones legs quite a lot harder.

I presume it's because there's a risk of a corner incorrectly given leading to a goal. Which increases the argument for VAR looking at both scenarios as an incorrectly awarded goal kick denies the attacking team a goalscoring opportunity.

The simple refereeing rule if you are not sure for a corner / goal kick / throw-in is to give it to the defence, causes less harm.

A corner incorrectly given leads to a corner. If we use the logic that it is a goal scoring opportunity then why not review free kicks near the box? But only when they are awarded, not those that weren't but should have been.

Same with penalties.

I agree with giving the benefit of the doubt to the defence. But this new rule leaves the involvement of var down to the ref. In every other instance var is used for review regardless of the ref's original decision
