Building fitness and sharpness, pre season is utterly irrelevant, certainly as this stage.Originally posted by 7sisters View PostMartinelli continues to make the case for the club to splash out on Eze.
I'd also add there's a reason you always see the young players standing out in pre season, they're busting a gut to prove they belong with the 1st team and should be given a chance. The older pros are literally using it to build up their match fitness.Last edited by PSRB; 07-31-2025, 02:21 PM.

Very good point. Exactly what's required at this stage but doesn't please the bean counters.Originally posted by Chief Arrowhead View PostI was thinking the other day about Wenger's preseason training and how calm it was. Nice, cool weather in Alsace. Pics of Wenger tooling around on his bicycle. A match or two against the local, non-league XI. Dont recall any major injuries. Those were the days...
I always expect a bit more from the team at the Emirates Cup.

No, but the injuries would seriously kick in once the season started. The later Wenger years constantly saw us carry at least 5 injured players across the season, although that was largely due to a small number of very injury prone players- Diaby, Wilshere, Walcott, Rosicky, Van Persie.....Originally posted by PSRB View PostVery good point. Didn't we change our entire medical/fitness staff and it stopped happening?Originally posted by Peter View PostNo, but the injuries would seriously kick in once the season started. Yeah, we fired the British Lions rugby union guy in charge (Dr Gary O'Driscoll) and then he lasted about five minutes at Manchester United before they threw him out too.Originally posted by PSRB View PostDidn't we change our entire medical/fitness staff and it stopped happening?"Plenty of strikers can score goals," he said, gesturing to the famous old stands casting shadows around us.
"But a lot have found it difficult wearing the number 9 shirt for The Arsenal."

Can't be done nowadays, the players all want far too much money so they have to go globe trotting in preseason and earn it.Originally posted by Chief Arrowhead View PostI was thinking the other day about Wenger's preseason training and how calm it was. And, of course, if you are looking to sell shirts and gather new fans from hugely populated, far flung corners of the world, winning those games would probably help your cause.Originally posted by redgunamo View PostCan't be done nowadays, the players all want far too much money so they have to go globe trotting in preseason and earn it.
