First half thoughts.... Martinelli so wasteful to the point it's hard to watch.

Well on that showing Trossard will easily start ahead of him. Against low blocks I just find Martinelli completely ineffective/wasteful.Originally posted by WES View PostYou're not coming across as particularly objective here, Rich.
Martinelli is in our first 11 this year, and quite rightly so.
Trossard looked good, though. Did himself no harm if he is indeed looking for a new challenge.

The problem with Trossard, which will continued to be compounded with age, is his inability to look good over 90 minutes; whereas, Martinelli can?t push the needle beyond 15.Originally posted by Rich View PostWell on that showing Trossard will easily start ahead of him. I?m not sure Trossard will accept the role of super sub going into this campaign, judging by the obvious strops thrown last season.
There?s an obvious need for an upgrade along that left channel.

I think it is about how we use and support it more than who plays there. Without question, we are not getting what we should from Martinelli. We've seen how good he can be.Originally posted by 7sisters View PostThe problem with Trossard, which will continued to be compounded with age, is his inability to look good over 90 minutes; whereas, Martinelli can?t push the needle beyond 15.

He thrives with open space. He's a very fast dribbler and an instinctive finisher. Problem is that this sort of scenario is afforded to him very little. He'd be a magnificent squad player but not a starter for me. Need someone more technical that can operate in tight spaces.Originally posted by Peter View PostI think it is about how we use and support it more than who plays there. Can't judge him on that performance alone but it was a repeat of what we have seen time and time again.

Well I agree. A hybird of Trossard (who is suberb technically) and Martinelli's physical characteristics would be perfect.Originally posted by 7sisters View PostThe problem with Trossard, which will continued to be compounded with age, is his inability to look good over 90 minutes; whereas, Martinelli can?t push the needle beyond 15.

If only we knew of someone like that, hey?! :eyes:

Isolated on the touchline, against his man with a defender behind. That isn't really his strength. Madueke looks a better build for that situation.Originally posted by Rich View PostHe thrives with open space. He's a very fast dribbler and an instinctive finisher. You want martinelli getting behind or inside his full back. But we never create it.

Well that's quite difficult when his full back is about 18 yards from the touchline.Originally posted by Peter View PostIsolated on the touchline, against his man with a defender behind. That isn't really his strength. Madueke looks a better build for that situation.

Madueke I have never once seen play on the left. I'm hoping one of Martinelli or Trossard is sold and we make a great investment on the LHS.

MA sticks him on the touchline, so not really his fault. MA wants the defence spread as wide as possible. Plus as I've frequently said, he is incredibly diligent in his defensive duties, probably to the detriment of his forward play.Originally posted by Rich View PostWell that's quite difficult when his full back is about 18 yards from the touchline.

I agree on both counts. But given that is what Arteta wants; he needs someone more technical there which Martinelli cannot offer.Originally posted by PSRB View PostMA sticks him on the touchline, so not really his fault. And yes; his defensive work is second to none.

Watch any highlights video on youtube. You will see plenty of examples of him playing on the left.Originally posted by Rich View PostWell that's quite difficult when his full back is about 18 yards from the touchline.

I don't know enough about him but I can see he is different to our current options. Same can be said for Gyokeres.Originally posted by Rich View PostI think he's going to be a marvellous aquisition. Looking forward to seeing him play.
I think both are coming to help us cause more chaos. That's a good thing.

We do seem to struggle to make many clear cut chances. Hopefully they do help with that.Originally posted by Peter View PostI don't know enough about him but I can see he is different to our current options. Same can be said for Gyokeres.
