  • Manfield away in the cup. Hope their pitch isn't like Grimsby's was at the weekend

    after 6+ weeks of non-stop rain.

    Blundell Park looked like an average '80s Div 1 pitch in autumn. But like Hackney Marshes this week.

    If Mansfield's ground is like that, we'd have no chance with passing Wengerball. We'd have to rely totally on set pieces, in which case Big Gabby, Dec and B have to play. {Though Noni's corners have been getting better and better.}

    Pity MnM's injured - would be perfect to have rested Zubi for him and gained the extra height.

    I reckon a CH called Salmon must leap like a Salmon, so he should play.

    Though Herbs reckons he's nailed on to get munched by a bear.

    Fortunately, we always batter them in the Cup

    "But a lot have found it difficult wearing the number 9 shirt for The Arsenal."

      Have we ever played them before? I don't remember, honestly.

      And have we played any other Jane Austen novels?

        I remember Charlie Nicholas scoring a hat trick at Grimsby in the Cup

          Once apparently, in 1929. We won 2-nil at Highbury. David Jack scored the first, the most expensive player in the world at that time.

            I have been chatting to their fans since they beat the Mancs this year and believe me, so do they. Seem quite chuffed that it was as close as it was and it took a hat-trick with two world class FKs from Charlie to beat them.

            They also remember us beating them 1-0 in the '36 Cup semi we went on to win. 'Twas their greatest ever season, came fifth in the top flight {with another cup semi in '39.}

            They also had a striker who, like Ted Drake, scored 42 in 42, albeit in Div 2 when they won promotion around '35.

            Civilised lot. Seem to quite like us. Don't much like the Mancs and hate Lincoln and Hull.

            Their new CH signed from us in Jan, Maldini Kacurri, had a great debut and they're already thinking "we'll make a fortune when he leaves in a couple of years - far too good for this level - let's just hope he gets us promoted once or twice first."

                    My grandfather saw him play, but he would have been quite young. About 16 by the time he left.

                    My great grandfather got shot in the arse in Basra during the first lot. So he wasnt an overly cheerful man by that stage

                      A Chapman Out sort, I presume. Typical Arsenal, trying to buy the FA Cup. 11k for one player! Shocking.

                        Possibly

                        My grandfather used to tell me about Alex James. I wish he'd lived to see Dennis....

                          I understand if he saw James then he did alright.

                          I'm just bemused your GGF was roughly the same age as my F.

                          Basra was '14 or so, that's maybe twenty years difference.

                            I believe he was born in 1890. Or thereabouts. Grandfather towards the end of the war.

                            My dad was born 15 years after yours.
