  • Typical that we should inadvertently get ourselves involved

in an ancient bitter struggle centred thousands of miles away from London, and indeed from Manchester. Today marks the latest installment of the "Abu Dhabi-Dubai Derby".

If you don't know it, it is fascinating stuff. Explains why, back in the day, Manchester City delighted in buying players from us; it wasn't just about the football but also, and more importantly, about cannibalising a rival, even if we were mostly unaware that such a rivalry even existed in the first place, and despite the fact that Emirates and Etihad are not really rivals as such in any case. They are siblings and partners too so excessive competition between them would be bad for both and the most important thing for them is that UAE as a whole wins in the end, which it will no matter which of us wins. If you follow me
"Plenty of strikers can score goals," he said, gesturing to the famous old stands casting shadows around us.

Seen. It's complete Ownership (Etihad) v mere Sponsorship (Emirates).

Emirates are content with the Kroenkes' self-sustaining model and are happy to offer partnership and limited financial backing. Whereas Etihad (and therefore Manchester City), of course, have access to an entire sovereign wealth fund; they are not accountable to .. accountants. Or shareholders or any other such troublemakers and killjoys. They never need to be able to show profit or sustainability, to steal a phrase. What's in it for them is simply positive global exposure for the UAE.

Some chap put this on the Twitters earlier..

The great liquidation: as this short war turns into a long one with a blocked Straits of Hormuz the Gulf States will be forced to start selling off their overseas investments to fund their very generous subsidies. In the UK alone the Gulf States own ?200bn of assets, but they will start selling the most liquid assets first - Government Bonds and high quality equities.

The current turbulence could rapidly turn into a rout with the UK leadership singularly unsuited for the challenges we will face, a history of Fabian Society membership isnt going to cut it. We cant afford for more emoting about Government support, with borrowed money.

        Food for thought ?
