I remember it being very cheap, but that was 20 odd years ago.

Yeah it normally is/was but after the 2008 financial crisis the Aussie dollar was so strong for a while it was almost parallel with the pound. Now it is back to almost 2 to one

Is it really that much? When I was flying Emirates to India regularly in the '00s, I seem to remember buying an Indian {who was half a dhiram short} a bottle for about ?2-3.

Made it clear that I was happy to buy him a drink but didn't want him thanking me for the next 4 hours. So I just drank my G&Ts and read Viz at the bar.

After 2 hours, I'm feeling better and get chatting to the Indian. Turns out he was a quantum physicist back from some academic conference and that they'd now worked out that the equations don't work with 10 dimensions but do with 11.

I'll never forgive myself for not picking his brain for the first two hours while I read Viz.

But anyway, it couldn't have been 15 quid back then. I'm too tight to buy a total stranger a 15 quid pint at a stopover bar. 2-3 quid is ok.

    Does that mean I'm old?

Or that Dubai has stopped selling itself as having the cheapest duty free and one like UK airports where it's all about rinsing customers?

What sort of country wants to encourage tourism but allows that sort of alcohol pricing?

    Oddballs...
They want the right tourism. Not the one where they?re scraping Brits off the road at 5:00am, or having call to prayer disrupted by a bit of external bantz sort of thing. ?

They even have Victoria's Secrets shops these days. I mean who doesn't go to an airport to buy their lingerie.

It was also weird travelling through at Christmas as there was Santas, Christmas trees and decorations everywhere. Carols playing over the tannoy. What's Arabic for "selling out"?
