Relative to to the industry in and around The Cally and Kings Cross, you understand. The site hosting that fine 1939 photograph describes it thus: "By this time Lewisham was a respectable and mature suburb and this view is evidence of the High Street's commercial success."
I think my nan moved there quite a bit earlier in the decade, if not at the end of the 20's. Given how London grew in the inter-war period, with the dash to the new suburbs, 10 years or so might have made a difference.
