But almost blew it in Birmingham.
We're gonna get gubbed :-(
My fear is Wigwam's injury.
Before Gabby got injured, I thought we'd have a chance with our two CFs out given how well we defend. Then we lost our two LCHs and I thought we're gonna get gubbed but Yakob stepped up and looked like Stevie Bould and Boom-boom Keown.
But now we have Jorgy injured and Wigwam suspended so that's both DMs out. {At least Wigwam will be back for the away leg.}
I guess the only options are Benny Blanc at DM, or Dec there with MnM at inside left and Leo up top. {If Cala was fit we could try MLS at DM.}
If MnM did drop back to MF, he's full of confidence now. It's not like when he was trying to fight his way into the team after the pre-season injury. The fans love him, we know he can do the tackling and aerial duels. Those two assists last night were gorgeous, just what we'd want from an inside left. And he knows he can score now. Those first two goals he scored as a CF coming off the bench were the type of goals a MF scores arriving late in the box. And he'd be in the right place to get back post headers from a B cross.
Just read that they may go with JT at DM with Benny Blanc at RB. Jurrien's such a complete footballer, he could do that. He inverts into MF from either FB position anyway, he can defend as a CH and knows the back line, and on the right side of DM with MLS inverting on the left, he can still link up with B and Odin {and Benny.}
It might just work.
I do wish we could keep Wigwam for another year but I'm sure he'll go for the big payday. His old club want him back, apparently.
Hope Sir C's still lying down so he doesn't see all my nicknames and abbreviations. Would hate to give the poor chap a heart attack now we've got a CL semi to look forward to. And think of the horses and his glw.
If I was Arteta, I'd find a way to convince Partey to give us one more year. I'd even give him two if he wanted it. He's huge for us.
I want Timber to stay where he is. He's ****ing murdering it at right back. No way I'd consider moving him.
Unusually, Peter is right, GG :-)
You don't touch this back 5 at the moment. And with Partey out I would take a draw in the first leg. If we can beat Madrid at the Bernabeu we can beat PSG at PdP.
I can't really see any option other than Merino in midfield and Trossard up front, I think Merino has been playing more like a midfielder even though he's supposed to be up front, anyway. Both his assists against Madrid came from positions in midfield.
If Arteta wanted to very conservative he could put White in Partey's position and leave Merino up front, but with him having been injured I can't see it happening.
To make things even worse, I agree with all 3 of you. I was just posting about an article I'd read that minute on Newsnow saying they'd play JT at DM. Didn't Leo get us 17 goals last season?
It's just Dec in the more advanced role has looked one of the best MFs on the planet.
Imagine we could have another summer that added Dec, Kai and JT to the team.
JT was injured and the plan to play Dec and Kai in a 6 and 8, but then turning to an 8 and 9 shows that we were bloody unlucky to come 2nd that year.
He tried to replace Wigwam and Granit all at once. Now Dec is the ultimate GX replacement. Better in every regard. But just like GX in his final season was at his best, now we have Wigwam to replace when he's at last looking consistently like the player we hoped we were buying.
Imagine if we'd had him with Santi and Ozil. {Or Dec for that matter.}
I think that was the plan all along unless Saudi came in with silly money. When we bought Dec and Kai they were the plan for the new 6-8 MF. If SA had offered a lot for Wigwam we'd have sold him. Dec moving forward is why we took the extra year option on Jorgy.
I think we were expecting TP to leave on a free this year - he's on big wages and we wanted Zubi but he may now be going to Real. {Prob looked at the two games and thought "I can get into that RM MF easy. But if the Arse buy a top striker, with MnM showing what he can do, and Kai having done so, AFC may go with one of those two at inside left and Dec at DM and I could find it harder to break into the team like my mate MnM did at the start of this season. So I'll go to Real and be a nailed on starter cos the Arsenal MF run them ragged."}
But yes, given Jorgy for 12m on a 1.5 year contract with an extra year option was a bargain. Assuming Jorgy goes and we buy a new DM, how much would we pay for Wigwam on a one or two year contract {or one year with optional 2nd?}
Quite a bit, imo. He's playing superbly and with Dec and Odin that's a top MF trio. I wish we'd sign these big money players who are in their late '20s peak with an optional extra year like with Jorgy. If they lose form, we don't pay them a fortune to warm the bench for the final year. If they stay at their best like Wigwam, then we can keep and have another year to find a replacement.
He wasn't very good at the start. He rated his playing at 4/10. While now he's at his very best. Also took him a while to get back to top form post-injuries.
Would love him to do a Bergy and take a pay cut every year he signs a 12 month extension, but that doesn't really happen any more.
I don't think PSG are as good as people make it. We will smother them. AV are sh*t. Anyway we will meet Barcelona in in the final and that is where we will get grubbed/gubbed whatever it is you say.
