The climate is very much the point. I don't think anyone's arguing his comment was anything but crass, simplistic and insensitive. However, the fact that someone can't just be allowed to say something stupid and then sober up, regret it and apologise, but must instead be hounded out of their job for it is deeply distasteful.
There were even calls on Twitter for him to be stripped of his MBE
