I would say that there are times when a straw is necessary. One of those big, long Bloody Marys, for instance. Much easier to drink through a straw. Although if you break off either end of the celery, that, too, will act as a straw.

I am not sure that a grown up, apart from when in McDonalds or Five Guys or a similar establishment, ever really needs a straw for drinking. Certainly with respect to a Bloody Mary it would be down the hatch in a few mouthfuls rendering the whole straw engagement a nonsense.

Nah, if the BM is a big one in (effectively) a pint glass with tons of ice, a straw is the way forward. Otherwise you end up with foliage up your nose and a big tomato juice moustache.

Let's be honest, though, we don't want to have to look at that sort if we're in a pub, bar or restaurant, do we? Off-putting. Best they stay at home out of sight. Anything that discourages them from going out can only be a good thing.
