    Carlton Palmer played for England 18 times under GT.

    And he dropped Martin Keown for Tony ****ing Dorigo.

    Had his managerial flaws but a top man.

    Dorigo was a LB though, maybe needed cover and we had plenty at CB......I can't remember

    I think it's fair to say that the fact that all the kind words are about what a nice chap he was and not what a great football manager he was tells its own story.

    He was very good at Watford, maybe the England job was a step too far?

    The England job is a step too far for most managers, tbf. There have been what, three decent ones since Sir Alf - out of goodness knows how many?

    True, although you could argue that stumbling upon the most talented British player of that generation was a fairly major factor in his success at Watford.

    Taylor even gave him his professional debut, I think. Scored about 100 goals for them too.
