I though I could hear the cries of anguish from here

20 years ago would have been preferable. Ben Youngs has also retired.

Kohli retiring....just taking the easy money?

Time for Kohli to go. Great career, terrible bloke

I liked watching him bat, and I loved watching him get out

He beat the aussies, in Australia, in a horribly bad tempered series where he really, really got under their skin. We can applaud him for that, if nothing else

I just loved the silence across the ground whenever he got out, especially if it was early in his innings and even more if it was lbw. The look on his face, how dare you give me out, for am I am the World's greatest batsman....****er!

And he clearly wasnt, anyway. I'd put Smith and Williamson ahead of him. As would the stats....

I actually quite liked his **** you attitude - and his passion for Test cricket was a massive boost for the game. Sadly watched a lot of the series in Oz and he was clearly done. Can't blame him for skipping out before facing the hooping ball in the English summer.

    Root
    Williamson
    Smith
Kohli is the correct order btw

I'm not sure about where to put Root. I see too much of him, including his failings. I do think it is harder to average 50 when half your tests are played in England. But it is tough to put anyone above Smith, regardless of how much I despise him.

Agree re Kohli. Glad he has quit now as he was clearly on the slide.
