    Attaching metal spurs to the fighting birds' legs was definitely a thing.

    The ball is indeed weird. It could be meant to represent an old lace up ball (the bit in the middle towards the right hand side) but the panels are all wrong, they were retangularish and/or T-shaped. Perhaps it's just a football designed by some American marketing interns.
