Ha! The aussies used to say they would offer him a single just to get him down the other end so they could bowl to someone who actually wanted to play the game.

Boycott claimed that the aussies never gave anyone anything, and they were no more generous at the crease than they were at the bar. And if they did want him down the other end it was only because they couldn't get him out.

You can see why people didn't warm to him

Comments here are nuts. He was insanely good for us. Not much he can do when the rest of the team were operating at a lower energy. He worked his arse off. Assists + goals + crazy off ball work. I get calling him a treacherous c**t for going to United, but to not like him when he played with us is a wild take.

He and Ozil deserved the current defence.

I was always more of a Giroud and Cazorla man.

"Wanted to play the game"; here, having the meaning "more willing to throw their wicket away."

We know what they're up to. Great compliment.
"Plenty of strikers can score goals," he said, gesturing to the famous old stands casting shadows around us.

"But a lot have found it difficult wearing the number 9 shirt for The Arsenal."

Was never fond of Giroud at the time. I remember saying to my mate on his debut, when he missed a sitter against Sunderland(?) - "the new Chamakh". Turned out to be decent I suppose.

    Chamakh...

    Mikel Arteta (vice-captain)

Right. Not even Mikel could do anything with that little lot. A terrific bunch of lads though, if that makes any sense. They did have their moments

On the other hand, you COULD make a decent bench for the current lot out of them. You know, if you happened to need a goal in the last five minutes or something. Bendtner, Olivier, Theo, Poldi etc.

Having said all that, Alexis probably wouldn't make all that much difference to the team today. Assuming he would replace Martinelli, we (anyway, me) would still be grumbling about thirty-goal a season strikers.

He was always a highspeed, world class danger for us and would add a few direct free-kicks and a sprinkling of star quality to the team. An in-form GM could match his output though and is still fairly young, plenty of potential there.
