Wouldn't have happened in the old days. Midfield formations were practically set in stone: You had one chap who could shoot, the "Attacking midfielder." Another who could tackle who was called the Defensive Midfielder. Added to one headless chicken-type with a good engine who played box-to-box, there was always the fourth who had failed to master any of these roles so was named "Captain".

When football was football, see.
Rocastle, Williams, Davis, Hayes
Parlour, Vieira, Petit, Overmars
Ljungberg, Gilberto, Vieira, Pires
