Instead, he got himself dragged into the **** with the lefties, the loonies and the Celtic fringe (as I like to call Nicola Sturgeon). All he succeeded in doing was putting himself in the 'there to be shot at' position that Cameron was so keen to avoid. Also, being seen haggling with Sturgeon about a coalition was incredibly damaging, since it's an association he desperately doesn't need at this stage.
