After all, English clubs have done very well in Europe historically; plenty of European Cups.

Those same clubs have won dozens of league titles between them too. Never heard any of them described as particularly "continental" though.

They were just damn good sides.

I reckon we're just not as good as we'd like to think we are, continental or otherwise.

I'm not sure. The teams above us have all played some great stuff this season.

We go about our business with an ethos, some might say a dogma

In comparison. But everyone has to work with the resources available to them.

Apart from when you have almost unlimited resources

It makes no difference; money always has a conscience of its own.

Right up until it was mathematically impossible, that's the same malady we all suffer from

Malady is right. After all, how can we beat teams with greater financial resources.
