No **** Sherlock Headline of the Day: 'Glasgow Crash Helicopter Grounded'

Faulty fuel guage apparently, quite important in an aerial

    mode of transport

  3. #3

how would that cause it tho ? as it had fuel in it still..?

  4. #4

Hmm, no one relies on fuel gauges in aircraft, they're notoriously unreliable.

Dipping the tanks is the only way. This story is a bit odd.

does the pilot get out on the wing on a 747 mid atlantic and dip tanks then ? must be v exciting

  6. #6

    Why is that?

  7. #7

There's too much potential for error, that's all. Before the flight you claculate how much

fuel you need, add a legal margin, (usually add another bit of margin for, as we say, 'the wife and kids') and uplift that amount. You know you have plenty for the flight including possible diversions etc, so the gauges are irrelevant.
