Conservatives up in arms over here about the blatant aggrandizement of collectivism in the opening..

ceremonies. Personally, I forgive all of that because of the re-emergence from hibernation of Mr. Bean! I love Mr. Bean!

Too difficult words there Chief, but yes, Mr Bean was great! hehe

Chief Im always confused as to what you yankees call a conservative.

Is it more republican than democrate for instance

I think the term means something different in UK, I;m always a bit confused myself

but over here a conservative is in favour of limited government and individual freedom. They believe the government and the judicial system strictly following the constitution as written. Economically they abhor the massive debt put on by both Bush and Obama and are most in favor of balancing the budget by reigning in spending, not giving more money to the government through higher taxes. Strong reverance for the military personell and their self-sacrifice. Believe in stronmg giving to charitable causes to help the less fortunate .. as opposed to government social programs.

As it pertains to our two parties you should think of conservatives as a subset of the Republican Party. With only two political parties of relevance here that would be the only possible route for a conservative to take in terms of voting. However if one wished a protest vote you could consider the insignificant Libertarian Party as well. Currently the conservatives aim to influence the Republican Party from within rather than "breaking away".

For your purposes, whenever you hear someone disparaged in the media as a racist, anti-gay, etc., they are a conservative.

As a huge fan of Nigel Farage I consider the UKIP Party to be our closest likeness in the UK.

I only get a partial paragraph, b&b, what was amusing?

  7. #7

Conservative once meant constrained now it's reactionary.

  8. #8

I find the word "Liberal" a lot more confusing

UKIP = GOP, please don't. Farage may come up with a good soundbite now & then but no just no.
