I've just noticed that the rank of one of my customers changed overnight from 'Major' to 'Lieutenant-Colonel'. I responded to this with a hearty, "Wish you joy of your advancement!" which went down doubly well as he immediately recognised the reference and confessed to being a fan of the canon.
