Is it simply my bias that makes me think Rooney on MotD is utterly useless?

I'm no tactical guru but even I would have thought saying "er, Vik ran in a straight line so, er, he could head the ball" is a bit simplistic. If you wanna analyse that goal, it was B's wayward pass and Gabby jumping into rescue the situation in such a way that he found Leo perfectly and set him away on the counter.

If B had played the pass better, we wouldn't have been able to break like that.

But as Rooney's up for us winning, I'll take it. Dunno who that Manc is next to him but he's against us. Really hope that we win it this year and Neville's really uphappy as a result.

Apart from anything else, he doesn't run in a straight line. He pulls up, waits, and then quietly takes three steps away from play to give himself space.

For your benefit, P, I have just got Wazza's analysis open in another tab and this is what he says:

"And Gyokeres's movement is just a straight line. He doesn't really do anything, there's very little movement but it gets him in the middle of the goal...."

I hope you're not implying that you provide more intelligent and insightful analysis that our Wazza. National treasure an' all that. Not his fault his IQ's lower than his shirt number.

But as he wants us to win and never played for a financially-doped petrodollar team, I'll give him a bye.

I remember that quite well. It was basically the 'anti-French' component of the old guard football elite along with the media. I remember noticing that in the written media it as always "... Wenger, the Frenchman,.." to obliquely recognize that he 'ain't one of us'. Looking back they viewed it as somehow some sort of cheating that Wenger tapped the market of world class French footballers that the Anglo-centric football culture of the time ignored. It made the 'old guard' look foolish. Of course the referees were right there with them in how they reffed the matches. What made it doubly perplexing was how they gave tongue baths to Cantona. Guess that was the ManU/Fergie factor.

For the first goal he is right. For Vik's second, he is wrong.

But, it really doesn't matter. He was where he needed to be and he scored. Doesn't really matter how he got there :-)

Rooney can **** off. Sol Campbell's leg. Fresh air. Mike Riley's whistle...... I wont forget that in a hurry.

He's deffo talking about the second goal. They've drawn lines on the pitch as he runs from the halfway line to head in Leo's cross.

Straight lines, as Wazza says.

I've just watched it again. He very clearly backs away just before and then after the ball is crossed. That is the crucial movement. Without it, the ball goes over his head.

He waits until the defender runs inside him before backing away.
