That's right. Essentially, Gilberto was a centre half that couldn't tackle without giving away a free kick and Mesut was a forward who struggled to shoot and score goals, so we took to calling their sort "midfielders".

For all their qualities, both lacked that Big Dick, Main Character energy we like to see. In fact, combine those attributes, or lack of them, in a single player and we often make them captain as a consolation.
