I was just thinking back to seasons gone by and remembered that fateful deadline day last season.
Who did we end up panic buying? Santos, Arteta, Park? Did Squillaci join then as well?
I imagine Wenger realising late on in the day that he barely had enough players to fill the squad so just thought he would go out and buy a defender, a midfielder and a striker, regardless of who they actually were.
I can't help but feel we'd have been better off just saving the wages (with the exception of Arteta - can you believe he had to take a pay cut to join from Everton :hehe: )
-
*Two seasons ago
And I believe we got Mertesacker then, as well? Squillaci joined one or two seasons before that, irrc
-
Pft, they all blend into one for me.
-
I don't know how he got it so wrong with Santos
I remember people saying at the time that he was a pretty poor defender and they couldn't understand why he'd signed him
I still remember someone pointing out that he was up at 03:00 posting pictures on Instagram the night before an important game :hehe:
-
Yes Squillaci was signed in 2010. I remember someone on here - I think it was a medical student of
some description posting on here that he believed SS was a miles better defender than Koscielny (admittedly based on what his mate had told him). Wonder who that was ;-)
-
And there is, of course, the video of him tucking into a large portion of fish and chips in the
middle of the season when he wasn't injured.
That in itself is not an issue. Most things are OK in moderation. But if you're a professional athlete who already has weight issues, it's probably best to stick to chicken salad.
These Brazilians often seem to have weight issues.
-
But he is a typical Brazilian fullback, better going forward than defending, he has been called up
Brazil again
I am much happier with Gibbs and Monreal even though Nacho had a few problems at the weekend
-

I heard that in France he was famed for being an efficient, if unspectacular defender.
They were certainly correct with the unspectacular apart.
-
Gibbs is surprisingly good in the air.
-
Santos had a few games of beginning to look really good before he got injured long-term
And then the fans started rinsing him when he was coming back. Sad times
-
But if you were buying a crap defender who's good at attacking
wouldn't you ask yourself a few questions when he turns up with fried egg and brown sauce stains down his shirt and a massive head and body?
-
Is it possible he had just the once? i.e. tried the famous English fish and chips therefore the
reason for the photo?
Certain people always look overweight, even athletes
-
Spot on, our fans have a lot to answer for, mind you, its the same with every club
-
It's a video, Nic. And he clearly knew what he was doing. Also, if trying it for the first time you
probably wouldn't have such a big portion.
He's a massive, lardy lummox of a man.
-
I'd seen Squilaci play a fair few times for Monaco and Sevilla and he was very decent
Though quite why Arsene thought such a slow defender would be an ideal fit for a team that plays one of the highest lines in europe is beyond me.
-
It was a club video of him in the Asenal fish bar
-

I would suggest that the coaching, medical, Dietitians at the club know a lot more
about it than any of us, unless of course they are all stupid and don't care
-
So it's the fans that made him shit?
-
He clearly was - he started well as well
Maybe if he had played alongside LK as we know him now rather than the version who was still settling in he might have been different. Per and LK seem to work just fine
-

Very true
Only a week and a bit to the First Test :cloud9:
-
Yes, basically this certain type of Brazilian eats too much.
-
A player can become a lot worse when playing without confidence, that is how fans can affect players
-
I see that the England selectors were drinking as much I was in Benidorm over the weekend
Ravi in the Champions Trophy squad.
-
The Barbarians seem to be taking this whole thing a little too seriously. Did no-one
tell them they are just supposed to be cannon fodder.
-
oooh are you suggesting mistakes were made?
-
See Pope's reply below, or is he talking rubbish as well?
-
Which means the return of leaden skies and drizzle.
Still, the NZ series is the perfect warm-up for the Ashes.
I'm not sure I rate Compton, though. I hope Root does well captaining the Lions and then comes in for Compton against Aus and opens the batting with skip.
Current and future captains opening up. Just like Straussy and Cook :cloud9:
-
Re: See Pope's reply below, or is he talking rubbish as well?
Rumour has it RvP, Ronaldo, and Arteta didn't even have time to pick up their knife and fork.

-
It's OK, though. You're only allowed one bouncer per over. He'll be fine when he's in the blues.
Or reds - whatever colour they are now.
-
Nah - Compton will open unless he is injured
he's coming off the back of a couple of centuries. Root is a huge talent though, he will be opening before long
-
He's in for his bowling, free
-
He's the type too though, G. Ronaldo, Ailton, Romario, Adriano, my kids' capoeira master etc.
They need to manage their weight very carefully indeed because of their habit of enjoying enormous long family meals. As soon as they cut down on the exercise, on come the pounds.
-
Should have picked a team of Christians in that case
They seemed to have spent more time on their selections then the Lions did at any rate
-
What if NC has shocking series againt New Zealand?
Not sure if that's possible, mind you.
-
They just need to learn to say 'no', R.
A life of excess seems to come very easily to them.
-
The proof of the pudding is in the eating - he's been replaced and sent out on loan
-
Ivan took the piss with him
Almost blew the Arteta deal with the lad having to take a pay cut to join.
Wanted Dempsey but got Benayoun and Park instead.
Dread to imagine how the Santos deal went down and who Arsene really wanted. Probably Monreal but got told - Heeeeeeeere's Santos! He's Brazilian like...lots of skills you'll love him Arsene....Bigger version of Ashley Cole :ivan:
-
What you on about? Our fans supported him. Even had a couple of songs for him
-

Says the man with servants
-
How many tests are there? 2 or 3?
The new regime don't drop people if they have a bad couple of tests. Compton will open in the first Ashes test match unless he's injured.
