Radiohead was probably the most popular, but mainly amongst the dorm room, pseudo intellectual crowd. "Creep" was an anthem for them. That milieu was where you got your music critics writing for various mags and then internet music sites so any Radiohead album was 5 stars no matter what. So the early 90's college audio freaks graduated to writing and reviewing in the late 90's/early aughts. Hence, OK Computer and Kid A were automatic masterpieces, albeit not backed up by sales, concerts or any devoted following amongst the masses. Plus he spelled his name Thom?!??! what the...?
Blur, Bush, Pulp, the Verve had songs here and there, but that's about it.
