As I understand it, he wanted an outright assurance that he would stay number 1 and Arteta wouldn't give him it.

I think the fact that they could sell him for 20 million and Leno was worth sod all probably came into it as well.

I don't blame him for leaving. He'd spent nearly 10 years as a number 2 or on loan and that summer he had a great chance to move. He could have ended up back on the bench and a year later everyone would have forgotten him.
