I keep meaning to ask the bro-in-law why they do that, I can't see it has any health benefit.

I remember us getting red and white hooped socks for a season in the mid-'80s. Didn't go down well. Letters in the oprogramme demanding we gave them to QPR for Xmas etc
Can't remember if they ripped or not.

Apparently, it helps avoid cramp in the calf muscle.

I find that hard a bit odd, when athletes deliberately wear compression socks to avoid this. You'd imagine the kit manufacturers would do something similar with football socks.
