as my summer holiday plans are now shot to hell, Mrs WES has floated the idea of buying a really upscale barbie and spending the summer in the garden. :cloud9:

And as this paranoid American bank of mine has everyone at home, I could spend the summer doing very little work and mostly be in my garden drinking beer/wine and eating all sorts of barbecued meat. With a fairly regular trip up to my village local.

I can think of worse things imo :cloud9:

You're going to buy a gas one, aren't you?

Nope :nono:

Undecided between just an upscale but normal barbie or one of the 2k wons.

You bought an eggy thing, did you not? Worth it in the end?

It is my most precious possession.

With a Kamado Joe Big Joe plus Joetisserie, you can smoke, slow cook, grill or rotisserie. You need to take some time to learn temperature control and you need to show some care and attention, but it's all so satisfying :cloud9:

Hmmm - I have read many good reviews and youtube is filled with very appealing videos.

What I don't understand, is why these egg thingys are that much better than just a good charcoal BBQ like this:

I think it's something to do with the ability to control the temperature. It's all very clever. There are probes and everything.

Possibly it is just my ignorance, but barbecuing is sort of like ordering a curry, it can be good but can it really be *that* good?

It strikes me as overkill, not sure I want to take barbecuing that seriously. Mind you, like Charles there are many people that swear by them.

More about controlling two temperatures at the same time, so you can have both direct and indirect heat goin' on within the same dome. Together with superior heat retention, it makes for far more versatility and less faff than traditional BBQs

The woodsmoke is the real benefit. You can't replicate that indoors.

It all just gets stuck between my teeth these days anyway. I'm not sure when my teeth started moving further apart such that it's become virtually impossible to eat meat without then having to ferret bits out for the next 20 minutes, but that does seem to be one of the effects of age for me. Quite tiresome.

Yeah, not sure I'm that big of a fan of the wood smoke flavour, though. And barbecue sauce is too sweet for my taste, I can enjoy it but only so much.

Which sort of takes me back to my point of whether it's worth it or not. I do like the idea of making pizza in it, though.

It seems a lot of fuel to burn just to make one pizza, but what do I know?

Just buy an outdoor pizza oven for about 1/10th of the price of a Big Gay Egg

Actually one of the benefits of the kamado-style ceramic barbecue is the minimal amount of charcoal required. You get a long, hot burn with very little fuel. Ideally, of course, you need to use the good stuff; the restaurant-grade big blosk charcoal, which isn't cheap, but you only need a little.

I'm glad. I want him to reject the kamado barbecue; if he bought one it would bring him a great deal of pleasure for many years, and the thought of him denying himself even the tiniest of joys in his worthless existence cheers me up no end.

Perhaps you have scurvy.

Have you ever eaten a vegetable? No, potatoes don't count. I mean something green. Other than the cabbage you boil with your bacon.

They are great. But it's not proper BBQing as you barely have to touch it. The image that Charlie likes to portray of him standing over it for hours, flipping the chimney another half-an-inch open with one hand to nudge the temperature up a few degrees while giving the charcoal the good rustle with the other, is laughable.

It's basically an outdoor slow cooker and requires fúck all actual effort.

I deep fried my hand this weekend, btw. I was making fish and chips and there must have been a water pocket in the fish because the 200 degree oil leapt out all over my hand. I got it under the tap straight away and then had it in a bowl of iced water most of the evening, which - along with liberal applications of aloe vera - seems to have saved me from massive blistering and skin loss.

Nasty. I am especially disturbed to hear of a 'water pocket' in your fish. It sounds a bit yucky.

Aloe vera is the shiz, isn't it? I keep a tube in the fridge for cooking incidents.

Well I think maybe there was a bit of batter that was insufficiently emulsified. So my own fault, really.

As you say, it's magic and I'm pretty sure it can cure everything. I don't recommend drinking its juice, though, due to it being powerfully disgusting.

Partly, I guess. In my case my fear of dentists (not phobia as it is entirely rational given the damage they have done to me down the year) doesn't help either.

Well, the way i envisaged it you would make the pizza dough and then a bunch of things you could add i.e. pepperoni, jalapeno, mushrooms, red onion etc and then make smallish pizzas which you could consume over time as a sort of starter phase until you got stuck into the meat.

Our village has one of those pizza vans with a wood burning stove every Wednesday night and I must say, they are rather good.

I'm reading about that barbecue now, still not sure that the eggy thing can justify being almost 2k more expensive :rubchin:
