I have to say that the tendency to to plaster deformity/amputee porn all over cigarette packets is one of the most repellent developments of the last decade or so. When you go somewhere where they don't cover up the fags, you're just confronted with this solid wall of amputations, growths, throat-holes, gangrenous extremities, diseased lungs and rotten teeth. It's fúcking rank.

Two years now since I stopped.

I quite fancy taking it up again. I miss not having the comforting weight of my Zippo in my pocket, and having an excuse to pop out inot the fresh air from time to time.

Funny I saw that picture in Tescos and thought it was over the top. Glad to know it’s fake.

Not a patch on the Canadian warnings..picture of baby with 2nd hand smoke around her and the message - please don’t kill me.

No, the average price of a pack being £10.40 and fashion are the main reasons for that. The torture porn is entirely incidental.

I said it wasn't the main reason, but it will certainly have helped along with the other points made...... it isn't classed as cool to smoke, so having pictures of blacked up lungs etc will help reduce it

No, I'm afraid it is still cool to smoke. I have a daughter and four nieces over 18. All are achingly cool. All smoke. All of them took up smoking in the period when these images were on packets. None of them cares about the pictures because young people don't think they'll ever die and so don't think such things apply to them.

This is the only possible argument in favour of this - and it's morally repugnant. But these people have no scruples about terrorising and traumatising children in order to get adults to do what they want.

Do try and think it through, p. Why would they even try it if it didn't have any social cachet - let alone go back to it? I can assure you it's not the taste.
You may not realise this, but you don't instantly get addicted to cigarettes. It takes effort. You have to go through a few weeks of doing something actively unpleasant before it becomes enjoyable (ie an addiction). Why on earth would you do that if there weren't other social factors at work?

Of course smoking is cool. The fact that most people aren't cool and so don't smoke does not disprove this.

And nobody wants to emulate uncool grown-up things like paying bills or getting life insurance. They want to emulate illicit, forbidden things like sex, drugs, drink and smoking.

Yes, so I understand. I was trying to work out at what point the whole scenario transformed from 'cool' to 'a bit shít, actually'? Was it when he fúcked it to the extent of crashing head-on with a Ford, when impact took place or when he got all mangled and died?

I think it's important to decide where the cool/shít line was crossed.

I reckon if I wrote a modern noir under a Scandi nom-de-plume in which the protaganist kills his victims by plucking out an eyeball and sodomising the bloody socket, it would cause quite a stir :-D - shame I can't write.
