This makes no sense. Why would anyone go back to a less safe, slower and more difficult shave? The world has moved on. I want to spend as little time and effort shaving for the lowest price. Going back to cutting oneself to flitters is counter to reason.

I might as well used one of these.

It's good. I told you it's good. Why would you deny my life experience?

Why would we want to go back to an age where men were men and women women? I mean, life has moved on so it's obviously better that the mentally ill make rules about how you address them, right?

Tsk tsk b. You are as good as saying c is a pompous old dinosaur who uses an antiquated shaving device in the belief it makes him more of a gentleman. Or he's just tight - look how cheap the feckin razors are!

It requires a little care to begin with but you soon remember the lessons you learnt when you were a youth, a, before the onset of the disposable consumerist society. You also remember the great feeling of satisfaction at a job well done.

Is it a closer shave c? Does one admire one's steely masculine jawline in the mirror after one has finished like they used to in the old razor commercials?

I've used a safety razor before, pal. Indeed, I learned to shave using one. It required patience, time and a steady hand - three things I simply no longer have.

While we're at it, why not go back to double declutching, drum brakes and manual choke?

A gentleman wouldn't be shaving himself in the first place, h.

It's not as close as a modern multi-blade effort, although if you want to you can go over it again and then it's really close. Let's be fair though, you're not going to have Jenna Coleman complaining that your stubble is irritating the insides of her thighs, are you?

My wife is still watching thon Victoria thingy. I caught some of it last night. It's very bad and Lord Palmerston is oddly young.

She's still awfully pretty, though.

On another note, I just finished young Mr Hepworth's latest effort on the LP. Not bad.

I'm all in favour of all of those things. They are among the reasons why I can drive properly. Without ABS, power steering, radial tyres and traction control one could take pleasure in driving safely and accurately. You youngsters just want everything handed to you on a plate, which is why you have no self-respect.

Which is why I use an electric one. **** wet shaving- takes ****ing ages and feels horrible.

I can go from full beard to clean shaven in a couple of minutes. Piece of piss.

This, presumably, is why you are regularly to be seen tooling about in your Austin 7, I take it?

I find electric shaving actually takes longer to get all the bits. I usually end up having to finish myself off with a wet shave anyway.

I only know her from seeing the first series. It says something that she is the only current toothsome hottie who sprang to mind. I suppose there are others?

Which Hepworth book is that? I get confused. I see there is a new one out I haven't yet read, 'Nothing Is Real'?

Well I am often to be seen driving my Caterham 7, which has pretty much the same technology as the Austin 7, yes. It is also significantly more powerful and, as a result, would kill one of you kiddies beofre you reached the end of the road. It takes some effort to learn to control such a car, so you wouldn't be interested.

I haven't read that one either. It's summat to do with The Beatles - about whom I am wildly indifferent. No, this is called 'A Fabulous Creation' and is about the lifespan of the LP between Sergeant Pepper and Thriller. It's on Audible.

It does require a bit of precision if you want a perfect shave, shifting between trimmer and razor. I still find it much quicker though.

The biggest thing for me is there is no dry skin or soreness afterwards.

I listened to another by that Coffin Path woman. It had Civil War lezzing up in it.

If I may make another recommendation, this is awfully interesting - far more so than it looks.

No, I realise that the reliance on technology has produced two generations of 'drivers' who cannot drive but merely operate the machine. The electronic trickery keeps them alive.

As we have recently seen in the airline industry, depriving a generation of stick and rudder skills rarely works out well in the end.

Anyway, what on earth is wrong with wishing to excel at something for the sake of achievement? Why break your back planting spuds when you can buy them at Tescos?

A fine choice with the Merkur 34C Sir C, as per the below I have the same thing. I went back to this shaving before my wedding and delighted myself with learning how to be disciplined and perfect the shave in the 6 months before my big day. It is a MUCH better shave than with a mac3 or whatever else and with much less irritation as well.

Of course now I just use a beard trimmer on its lowest setting and never actually clean shave at all. It is so much easier all round.

Ooooh. Good idea. Then I could buy my blades off my fave barbers in Paharganj. Missus will be there in two days. I shall ask her to get me a few packs in case I get one of these. And one of those anti-septic crystals then rub your fave with after they squirt you with the plant waterer thingee.

You have clearly never been shaven by a sub-continental with a proper, old skool, cut throat razor, have you? It's even better when you get them to shave your head with one at the same time. I'm not really a hippy but you can definitely feel your crown chakra breathe. Danny in Withnail and I could not have been more wrong, imo. Though the sadhus agree with him.
