everyone dying because some dozy cvnt in the London Fire Brigade told them to stay in a burning tower block.

Interesting to see how this can be blamed on Tories/Thatcher/The Royal Family/The British Empire, tbh.

Ah. How was Paris, old chap? Did you enjoy any culinary delights?

Not really. Paris doesn't really seem to do good food any more.

Weather was nice, though.

Not even the basic stuff? No properly baveuse omelette at Café des Capucins? No steak frites at Bofinger? No legendary Baba au Rhum at Le Train Bleue?

The spectacle of people climbing to the top of a pile of bodies to plant their particular flag of self-righteousness is always a depressing one, whoever does it.

Meanwhile, the fire extinguisher on the landing outside our flat has been removed for 'safety' reasons. Apparently fire-fighting should be left to the professionals and the residents' job is to get out of there toot sweet. So instead of quickly putting out a fire we should let the building burn down waiting for the fire brigade to arrive.

Oh, yeah. You can still get the basic stuff, but only at eye-watering prices and it's no better than one could get for less over here. Sad, really.

This stuff still does the old-fashioned brasserie thing well, but the food is nothing special.

And the posh stuff? You were, perhaps, disappointed by Les Amabassadeurs, L'Astrance and Georges?

They used to be pretty decent. Perhaps they've gone off a bit. :-(

No, but the thing with France always used to be that one could pop into pretty much any local cafe or brasserie and get really good, unpretentious food for not much.

It's still possible in places outside Paris.

Balls to that.

Never had the balls. Not in Paris. I once enjoyed a plate of balls in a little Lao place off Sukhumvit Soi 15, but the best part of that meal was that they served beer despite the ban on alcohol due to it being the Buddha's birthday.

Nice, they were. The balls. Never found out whose balls, sadly.

Maybe they were the Buddha's

I'm pretty sure they weren't big enough, although God knows I have no intimate knowledge of the Buddha's scrotal contents.

They were quite dinky. I thought perhaps dog.
