It turns out that if you don't fancy talking softly and holding a big stick a la Teddy R, just holding a big stick will suffice.

Of course they may be thinking, "Whoa, don't mess with him, he's a fúcking nutter and he might nuke us", but it does seem to be working. Unlike the tactics of the limp-wristed sack of baby caca who preceded him.

Well he claims to be all about negotiation, doesn't he? And in any negotiation one looks at one's strongest bargaining chips and decides how best to deploy them. He has two main bargaining chips: the fact that he runs the biggest economy on earth and has by far the most powerful military. He has therefore reasoned that to enter any negotiation unprepared to deploy either of these chips would be quite remarkably stupid.
