How in fvck’s name do you allow your leader to stand up in Parliament and ask that question without someone having done the few minutes’ research it would have taken to realise you were throwing him into a bear trap? :shakehead:

Isn't there some doubt about that, they were destroyed in 2010, Conservatives were in power, they could have overturned that decision if they wanted????

Apparently it was to do with the closure of the Croydon office. No space for storage. Destruction of files authorised by Labour.

Closure went ahead as planned. Not as if a Tory government is going to revisit the decision to close an office and save money, is it?

undeniably, p.

To suggest that these people should be deported is ridicules. I suggest the fúck up was not destroying papers 60 years later but not giving the families passports / leave to remain back in the day.

*EDIT* It appears Labour were in power when they arrived in the UK

It is. And the most absurd thing about it is the Home Office's apparent belief that they could just doggedly refuse to budge on such a blatant injustice and get away with it. If I were May, I'd be demanding Rudd's resignation for that alone because, while the whole thing is clearly a bureaucratic clusterfvck, that specific decision must have been hers.

As I recall my history, the idea was never that they would stay for the rest of their lives. We thought we could bring them in as - effectively - gastarbeiter and then send them home when we were back on our feet. The notion that they would come here, raise families and put down roots never seems to have occurred.

The idea of ministerial responsibility went out the window years ago though, didn't it? Short of getting caught with porn on your hard drive no one resigns these days
