Really?! You mean the little highlights packages or the actual commentary? If the latter then will just have to watch on mute and put TMS on.

And so you should - feel dreadful. No need to kill yourself old stick. I think your predilections will do that shortly enough.

Took up your recommendation for Great Expectations - excellent read

It is a great read indeed, but actually bettered, I feel, in film form by David Lean. A true masterpiece.

There's a filum! And if a man of your calibre declares it a masterpiece, that's enough for a humble tradesman c.

Berni dared to utter the same sentiment about the musical Oliver! besting Oliver Twist.

Actually, That's not true H. Women are being shoehorned in all over the gaff and it's just never really scanned, has it ? Listening to women commentate on Football is akin to listening to some pre pubescent 11 year old lad giving it his all on Jim'll fix it ( back in the day ).
The pitch just lacks gravitas for me.
Of course. The real cruel blow to feminist types must be the fact that broadcasters have gone out of their way to wheel in a succession of miss world bints to anchor things like SSN and other Footy showpieces. No sign of a Clare Balding type smiling across the desk at a bloke, invariably old enough to be her father there eh ?

My dear old school chum James Knight appeared in the original West End stage production of Oliver. He is now, of course, distinguished Labour peer Baron Knight of Weymouth. God only knows how an Old Elthamian ended up throwing in his lot with the socialists.

I assume the lady will be doing the introductory and continuity pieces, the actual commentary as such being left to the trusted individuals and ex-professionals.

Kind of how the BBC like to pretend Gabby Yorath has a role to play in their football coverage.

I used to love them. They seemed terribly irreverent and naughty back in the day. They did one about smurfs and another about Prince Andrew getting 'crumpet'. Very racy.

Listen, men invented the game, didn't they? It therefore speaks to something peculiar to men. Women may understand the forms and even some of the technicalities (if they're particularly bright fillies), but they will never - NEVER - understand in their souls (if they have such things - I suppose we must presume they do) why it is that the game exists and what makes it truly great.

It's like us and childbirth. We'll never really get it.

Oh I quite agree. I heard a woman commentating on a football match once. It was excruciating.

I must, however, point a little something out to you wholly in a spirit, you understand, of fraternal love. If I ever see or hear you use the phrase 'it speaks to' again, I will pay to have you assassinated in the most painful way available.

I am shocked and saddened by what I have seen here. :-(

I think in this instance and context that usage is acceptable, actually.

You see, no woman would ever unbidden have picked up a rock and a stick and wondered how far they could hit one with the other. Neither would it occur to them to kick a static object into a given space. It's not in their nature. Given which, how can they possibly be accepted as authorities on such matters?

But they could argue that having played the game and still being rubbish commentators means that you can't discount someone just because they haven't played the game at a certain level or their gender...

Oh, it's nothing to do with having played the game, it's understanding why the game is played at all that women can't do.

Many times I've bemoaned the fact that Sir Ian Botham, while a glorious cricketer, appears to have learned absolutely nothing about the game he played for 30-odd years.

He still understands it better than a bird can, though. FACT.

But he does understand it, b. He just cant talk about it.

One can line up all sorts of decent chaps who can talk a great test match but none of them ever took 383 test wickets for England. One doesnt achieve that by not understanding the game.

This is why women cant be pundits in the real sense. They have never played the men's game, never played under the kind of pressure that the men's game attracts. They dont understand it. They are no more 'expert' than I am.

I want to hear from someone who knows how it feels to score a hundred for England. The rest can go to hell.
