In some sports the NI players are included in an all Ireland team not UK e.g. Hockey - so the 'United Kingdom of GB and NIwould be a mismomer as does not include NI in those cases. Obviously this grates somewhat with the unionists.

I seem to recall some confusion over the status of athletes as Northern Irish had the choice between representing GB and Ireland hence the need to include Ireland with GB was negated. Possibly a very crude outline but you get the drift i.e. the IOC see the Ireland team as representing the whole island as they do in most decent sports like rugby and cricket
