Shame, I was thinking of starting my summer barbecue and negroni consumption otherwise.

However, negronis when it's cloudy and 15 degrees just wouldn't feel right. :-(

I'm down south this weekend and tomorrow is looking to be partly cloudy and 17c. So not too bad.

In other food related new, any idea how to cook whitebait? I bought some sardines and whitebait from my fishmonger the other day and was looking to do a seafood BBQ of sorts.

Edit: I won't attempt to BBQ whitebait.

Couldn't be simpler. You dredge them in flour seasoned with salt, pepper and (my twist) some smoked paprika. Then just shake the little fellas off in the basket of your deep fat fryer to remove excess flour and put into the hot oil. They're done in a minute. Serve with lemon wedges and (if you must) tartare sauce.

I am of course assuming that, as a serious cook, you own a deep fat fryer. If not, you might as well chuck them away.

I've been in Amsterdam most of this week. The weather veered from beautifully warm to freezing, with gale force winds and hail. Stupid Amsterdam.

Also, why do they have so many 'Argentinian' steak houses with all you can eat rib offers? :rubchin:

People seem to get very hungry there

:hehe: Talking of which, my sister found out over Christmas that my 15 year-old nephew and godson smokes weed and absolutely lost her shït about it. The fact it was obvious seems to have passed her by. Anyway, she keeps catching him at it/finding his stash and losing her rag - which is all very funny. So now he's supposedly said he's stopped smoking.
However, the other day on Facebook, she posted a picture of a load of demolished pizza, crisps, biscuits, etc that he and a mate had polished off in the front room and not tidied up with the words 'A little late-night snack-ette left by my son and his friend' and appeared not to put two and two together.

:hehe: I didn't have the heart to tell her. I'm slightly alarmed that a sister of mine is that naive, tbh.

 I noticed that. It's the equivalent of the Angus steak house but amplified.

Also I was scared to even go near the door of these places or look at the menu as the bloke will pounce on you to come in

I don't own a deep fat fryer, B. Can I just use a wok and heat up a load of olive oil in it before frying at very high heat?

You can, but you might want to use a thermometer to avoid burning the ****ing house down/getting covered in boiling fat.

Seriously, go out and buy a deep fat fryer. They cost flumpence and are much safer and easier to use.

I too have noticed this and gathered that it was a front for people of dubious employ to offer their services.

That's the thing, I'm sure she didn't. I'm pretty sure she used to talk about smoking dope when she was at University. I mean, I know she was never a drug taker on my scale, but I sort of assumed she'd dabbled, ffs!

But presumably you can get ribs, too?

Oh, no doubt about it. I just can't imagine that a city would have such huge demand for ribs.

There must be a code word that you say while ordering that gets you an upgrade to a dining area for 'valued customers'.

I was tempted by ribs, but then remembered I had a beard. Eating ribs in public is bad enough when you're clean shaven. Bearded, it would look appalling.

Some of them are excellent. I once gorged myself in such a place with Ian Harvey. What an odd thought.

Yes. I did once as well (not with Ian Harvey, of course). But now there seem to be millions of them. It's like they've been breeding.

I got a kroket from a FEBO in your honour while I was there.

Stout fellow. I've made them a few times recently but they're never quite the same.

They were flogging them in that outrageously expensive Dutch food place in the airport. I almost got some for you, but since I had no idea when my flight might turn up, I feared they'd defrost in my hand luggage. :-(

How are you by the way? Upright?

You're awful kind.

The money I've spent there on aged Gouda :-(

My wobbles appear to have become a permanent feature. They're not really going away. I've been walking with a stick :-(

And for clarity you do realise the bit about feeling bad was a lie.

The old man and I completely forgot we'd put a cauldron of ribs on this morning (honey, garlic, soy sauce, claret). So when the children arrived home from school at teatime, it was beers and bread and barbecue all round. Token salad for the birds. Lovely.

It's an EU racket, to keep the Americans out. I understand they're all owned by the same bloke/firm, just like all the "Irish" pubs you find in every Eurometropolis.
