A fine-looking aeroplane, no question; quite possibly the finest looking aeroplane.

Many RAF pilots flying the P51 for the first time were amused to note the inclusion of a cigar lighter for the pilot's comfort and convenience. Those crazy yankees, eh?

A bit of a bitch to land, you know. The laminar flow wing was very critical in the flare.

I had the privilege of a few minutes hands on in one once, from the rear seat. She needed a strong hand.

Have you been to the Lone Star aviation museum in Galveston, C? I found myself there 20 odd years ago...they have some wonderful planes ;-)

I expect she scared you a bit C with you usually pootling around in one of those little Chipmunks.

And will you man the feck up with this little dizzy spell. Vertiginous nausea my arse - too much taste of the cock if you ask me. Just find a decently rough pub, down a few Stellas and get into a decent manly scrap, you'll be cured (and do try not to blub if you get a fat lip).

A 420 bhp Yak 50 was significantly more of a handful. No, I mean that the control forces were rather higher than one would expect. Dogfighting such a beast must have been a physical ordeal.

He was, quite frankly, an egomaniacal monster. It could be argued that his obsession with the Big Wing theory came perilously close to losing us the Battle of Britain.

In other words, a true English gentleman.

There is a story about him wandering through a mess hall whilst the erks were dining. Approaching a chap's plate, he poked his swagger stick into the dinner and sneered, 'What is this?'

Wasn't that way when I ate there. Quite the finest bread I have ever eaten instead of an amuse bouche. Snails to start, beetroot salad then guinea fowl with truffle as I recall. And dessert was the best bit.

Exceptional.

In general, I would assert that a snail is a pleasingly chewy vehicle for garlic butter. I once, however, enjoyed a snail and mushroom crumble in a little French bistro, pleasingly titled 'les escargots avec ses compagnons les champignons '.

His were from Bedfordshire or something equally surprising - they came on a slate plate which had about 4 sauces drizzled across it. You picked up a snail with your hand, smeared it in the sauces and ate it.

Utterly delicious and not at all poncey

Germany - loads of them in Germany.

All RCAF offices got oversea postings and the overwhelming majority were to Germany. My father did something good at some point apparently and got 3 years at the Canadian embassy in London where, according to him, all he did was push some papers around and go to the pub with the American, British, South African and Australian embassy chaps.

His memory of that period extends as far as Saffies being nasty, Australians being misogynistic drunkards and British embassy chaps thinking that grabbing the bottoms of the female embassy staff was perfectly acceptable.

Safe to say, he enjoyed it.
