Don't bother with Haight Ashbury. Take a cable car. Alcatraz is great. I spent a few days there before getting bored and catching a flight to Maui which was great...

My favourite city in America and the only city I'd consider living in. October is a good time to visit as it will be pleasant and the sun may shine. Usually due to the hill straight off the bay, it is usually cloudy. If you like wine, head to Sonoma Valley for a couple of days.
