Time for Root imo

Fair enough, needs a change. Hopefully it won't affect Root's batting

Good. A damned ordinary skipper if we're honest. Lucky he had a half-decent side most of his tenure. In earlier, darker times he'd have been disastrous.

I expect it will. The captaincy usually knacks their batting.

Good. That's the important thing right now.

Stepping aside with a bit of dignity, knowing he can't take things forward any longer. Good for you Arsene :-O

I blame Andrew Strauss. I just *do*.

Still is, by a distance, the best opener we have

yep...still the best.
hopefully being free of the captaincy will get him back to his best...those india tests broke him.
Wouldn't complain if he wanted sit out a few tests and just enjoy country cricket for a while before returning. maybe even a small T20 series somewhere just to get the love back.

He was equally over-cautious, it's true, but I think that tendency is a legacy of years of being a bit shït. This meant that even when we were good, we didn't believe in our players enough to take risks. That lack of confidence shown by the captain becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy, since it takes the belief and responsibility away from the individual players.
