do you look at them outside of work.

If you have your own business you are excluded from the question.

Yes. Yes I do.

Should I turn mine off?

being the anxious type sometimes I read stuff that annoys me.
Though I like seeing what I am in store for before I get to the office plus I also use it to filter out rubbish I don't need.

But perhaps it's a bad habit. I also check it when I am at lunch. :-(

We live in a competitive age, f. There is no down time. If you snooze you lose. And so on.

I often answer a couple of emails in bed before I go to sleep. I'm not some sort of lazy student, or communist. I need to feed my family.

One positive is if you are waiting for something important or some good news you know you are good for tomorrow.

Though if you see an email on friday from the boss can you pop in for a chat on monday morning you might ruin your weekend.

Yep - dealing with people in the Far East as I sometimes do, it's often quite handy to look at it in the morning to see whatever **** they expect me to do when I start working after lunch. Also if one likes a long lunch, that and Skype can be invaluable

That reminds me.

If say I sneak out early or vanish for a while can keep an eye on any important messages.

No. I have a work phone. If I'm off, I will check it once a day only. If I'm on holiday, my out of office makes it clear that people should ring me in an emergency. If they don't ring, it's not an emergency and they can fück off.

No and to be fair I don't always check my emails when I am in work either.

Trouble is, people have been conned into believing *work* is synonymous with *making money*. I blame The Donald :-\

Worse.....my work want me to have a locked down company phone with email on it. They won't put it on my personal phone. I refused saying I won't carry around two phones and I won't have a locked down iPhone only useful for calls and their email. The only reason I would even entertain the idea of work emails on a personal device is to sit in boring meetings deleting pointless emails.

Sensible approach. Dealing with emails is dealing with other people's work....as opposed to your own.
