Agree 100%. I hardly ever watch telly, but his TV review was always the first thing I read on a Sunday before the non-fiction book reviews.

I used to hate the weeks when some other muppet was writing it instead. Never bothered to read them after trying a few times. Now every week will be like that. It was only by reading them that I found out about shows I should actually watch on iPlayer, like the Hollow Crown or The Night Manager.

Now I'll probably not watch tv again. Great.

My beloved saw him speak at the Sheffield Documentary Festival and said he was great, too. Around the time he was getting all that **** for offing a baboon.

And the restaurant reviews, even though I never go out to eat. It was great learning about the history and origin of food.

But some of his best stuff was the travel. I remember his recent thing on the Calais Jungle. "Every kid in every refugee camp says they want to be a doctor when they grow up. They want to heal the world." Something like that.

Yes, AA Gill, you will be sorely missed.

Other than the baboon bothering, obvs. Mind you, baboons are nasty aggressive búggers, and baboon shít is the worst thing to get on your shoe.

I wonder if The Wolseley will set up his usual table the way they did for Lucien Freud?

Condolences to his family of course but in general I don’t subscribe to huge outpourings of grief for celebrities from mere ordinary people. The passing of Bowie earlier this year almost turned into a sideshow as people compared their levels of grief with each other.

I hadn't watched or listened to anything Wogan had done for yonks, but as I think I explained before, I find it extremely jarring every time I recall he's not still knocking about. Odd, really.

Prince and Bowie were chaps whose worked I've enjoyed (loved in the case of Prince), but who hadn't done anything I cared about for ages, so their deaths were really only of passing interest.

What does it matter if you're reading them on your iPad? The Times iPad app is miles better than the Tele's, which can only be described as 'unbelievably amateurish'.

I pretty much read it cover these days - I think it's by far the best, actually offers some balance (mainly because Murdoch interferes less with it than the ST or Sun) and has Mike Atherton :cloud9:

I have no idea what baboon **** is like on the shoe, and don't agre with hunting unless you munch it, but I'm afraid Gill's case:
1. I'm not gonna let my morals deny me his writing. (Other examples of such hypocrisy include Cat Stevens and the Rushdie Fatwa. Like his music too much to stop listening.)
2. Gill's bright as fück. If his mind can justify it to himself, then fine.

But totally agree with Celeb deaths. Even Bowie, I only listened to stoned at uni before I got into raving.

Exactly. I haven't listened to a Bowie song later than Ashes to Ashes (c.1980/1?) when AA Gill was my first reading every Sunday. Huge difference.

It's horrible, really, really horrible. The baboon shít. I walked straight through a baboon toilet area in the Mara once and that stuff niffed and clung to a quite ridiculous degree. I felt quite sorry for my room boy that evening.

Look, the Times going tabloid pissed me off, cos it made it bigger. (I always folded the broadsheet into 1/4 when I needed space - prob cos I should wear glasses but can't be arsed to so it's easier to bring close to your face.)

But Peter Brookes's cartoon. Best of ant paper by far. A C20th/21st Hogarth or Gillray.
