They're waypoints, f, which connect 'flight paths' - which are more properly called Airways.

They have odd names because there are loads and loads and loads of them worldwide and I suppose they can't afford to duplicate. Some are quite funny, actually. There is an approach procedure in the States that goes ITAWT ITAW PUDYE TTATT IDEED.

Manchester has ARFUR and DALEY.

There are lots of others but I forgot them :-(
