The suggestion that they are waiting for him to retire before bestowing the honour doesn't hold water, given that Sir Bradley Wiggins just won another gold.

"Game, Set and Match to Sir Andy Murray" would have a good ring to it at next year's Wimbledon

To be fair, Wiggins was the first Briton ever to win a Tour De France, which was a rather more significant achievement than his Olympic nonsense. I think it was that for which he was knighted more than anything else.

Same with Hoy. He was knighted whilst still active. Personally I don't think Wiggins should have been knighted until he retired. Other than in jousting it is faintly ridiculous to hear "Sir Bradley" or whoever in sports commentary. However.... they set a precedent and Murray's achievements are not inferior to Wiggins'.
