NO LINKS! There's no way I'm emotionally strong enough to watch one at the moment.

Yes, firmly back in the saddle, sadly.

We had a rather splendid time, thank you.

I become ever more firmly resolved to rest my old bones amidst the chirruping cigales.

I trust that all is well with you and yours?

Are you not worried that the mistral and the cigales will drive you mad? The last time I spent two weeks down that way I did start to understand why they say that about the mistral.

All well, ta. The glw and I have been discussing when next we might see you. I would thus entreat you to consult your diaries forthwith for a time when you might come up and see us.

I think 'our' bit is sheltered from the full effects of 'The Masterly Wind', as even quand il souffle he's more of a breeze than a maddening tempete.

I shall instruct the memsahib to break out the diary and supply dates forthwith.

It's not so much feeling it I recall as it being a constant aural presence. Like living near the M25 or something.

Ah no, we don't have that.

I used to do training camps near Lezignan, where they have the tramontane. Now there's a wind to send you mental. Days on end of a constant 60 mph. Doesn't change direction opr strength. Just blows.

Yeah, that sounds familiar. Maybe that's what causes all these poor Allans to go mentally ill and murder people?

By the way, I've discovered a new podcast (well, new to me) that is highly hilarious. It's called 'My Dad Wrote A Porno'. Are you across this?

No; I shall investigate forthwith.

For long drives in France I would heartily recommend the Maigret audiobooks. Awfully atmospheric.

You have to go back to the beginning. But you're an intelligent man - you probably didn't need to be told that.

It took but moments to decide to commence at part 1. I didn't get where I am today without knowing to start at the beginning.

Yes, I realised half way through typing it that it was a ridiculously stupid thing to say, but carried on anyway.

So what was your culinary highlight of the hols? Did it involve foie gras?

We stuck very much to simple brasserie fare on this trip, and mainly in restaurants with which we are familiar and have favourite dishes, so discovered little new but enjoyed all.

There was a memorable confit de canard whose accompanying frites had been fried in (possibly aged) duck fat to an almost soggy consistency. A parmentier de brandade which must have been almost 50% garlic. Oysters tempura with wasabi... an oeuf dur mayonnaise... the standard memorable stuff.

V told me last night that the best thing she ate on holiday with an omelette with goat's cheese, browned but perfectly baveuse. But I cooked that.

Aww, that was sweet of her. The best thing I had in Sicily was a caponata with tuna. The problem being that I went on to try caponata everywhere, but none was as good and the worst of them just tasted like slightly sweet, cold ratatouille.
