It's all so unimaginable to us; not simply the slaughter, but the idea of receiving a summons from your country, being forced to leave your job and your family, to have your very existence owned by the army, sent to wherever you might be required to live in mud and cold and fear, and then to be killed or maimed... these things are entirely beyond our ken.

We've been a very lucky few generations.
