Oh, I didn't know one was on. Must watch it on iPlayer.

His series on France was absolutely outstanding - deeply affectionate while also taking care to dismantle rather a lot of their preciously-held national myths.

To be fair, Musso was very much the cuddly face of fascism. Bless 'em, the eyeties aren't really cut out for centralised totalitarianism - or any other form of organised government, for that matter.

I'm just happy he's found some more suitable work

Ironically, the cannon on his shirt looks rather detumescent. If only Raphael had been. :-(

They both did but I was specifically talking about Meades, here's the BBC einPlayer link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b07d7nj9/ben-building-mussolini-monuments-and-modernism

Hmm. I was a big fan when he was a restaurant critic and enjoyed some of his early TV work, but I've felt recently that he has invested rather too much energy in his shambling Blues Brother image, and the wimsy and irony is now not so much sprinkled around the commentary so much as laid on with a trowel.

Ultimately though, you're in Rome you're going to get imperial ideas, arent you? Kind of lends itself to it really.

Interestingly, that doesn't have the Channel 4 J'accuse one he did attacking vegetarians back in the 90s. I watched it not long ago and, while a bit heavy-handed in places, it was extremely funny and rather well argued.

Ah see, I rather thought he sounded like an utter **** in his food work. Mostly because anybody writing, or talking even, about food runs so gayly into the long grass of pretentiousness.
