I have to say, host advantages aside, I cant look far beyond France for this summer. Germany dont look together enough, Belgium seem to have brilliant players but too many off form, Spain are still looking for a striker and England have nothing but.

In short, Olly will return to Arsenal a Eurochampion having scored the winning goal in the final*

*or possibly having lost his place to Tigres UNAM's Gignac.

The frenchies tend to do well at home, which is odd, really, given that the french public really don't give a ****.

As long as it's not Arsene, I don't care. I wouldn't like to think about AW sexting people. :-(

Yes, though I do think we may well be in for a very disrupted tournament, terroristically speaking.

Wenger's in England though, Fleet Street would never forgive Him for going all super-injunctioney on them.

Money does twist people's melons though, as we know. Perhaps the Emirates Stadium bankers would want it* hushed up, seeing as they seem to be in charge of football matters at the club nowadays.

*Whatever *it* may be, of course.

Though their fans are booing their striker and the manager is being accused of racism, so not all is well avec les bleus.

They are but, y'know, it's France so I'd imagine there's a soupscon of truth there too.

I liked the way Eric said Deschamps was the frenchest of frenchmen. Eric Cantona accusing someone of being really french. It's like Jimmy Savile accusing someone of being a bit noncey.

So all French are racists? Do they stink of garlic as well?

No, france is a racially charged society though, but I was making a perhaps-too-subtle joke by making a racialist generalisation about them being racialists.

Are you suggesting that the Gard is the same as the Parisian banlieues? That the Gers is 'racially charged'? What the hell does 'racially charged' even mean?

When were you last in France?

Last year, if that's OK with you. Are you honestly telling me that race isnt a big issue in France, that there isnt an uneasy tension between beurs and europeans?

Not where I go, no. Race is as much of an issue in France as it is anywhere in Europe. So a few specific urban spots. Nothing that would serve to define a whole coutry as racist.

Who are? Who are you calling 'a bit racist'? A whole country? You've interviewed them all? I know several French people and not a single one could be described as 'a bit racist'. Does this mean they aren't really French?

I'd understand your argument if it were about the Irish, who are, of course, fiercely racist.

I'm saying that if you averaged out racism across the entire French population, you'd probably have each white French person on average being about 25% racist.

Not that that makes them bad people, of course.

The fact that quite a lot of them persistently vote for a party with a fairly solid track record of racism (one which despite Madame Le Pen's excellent PR job makes UKIP look like the pussycats they are, in fact) doesn't suggest to you that there may be a fairly strong current of racism running through white, rural France, no?

Nah. Not more than anywhere else.

I agree that racism is in every society, but I think the difference between different societies lies in the degree to which it gets challenged. Here, one could argue it gets challenged almost to a fault, but in certain parts of France - possibly as a result of their large rural population and relative racial homogeneity - it seems not to be to quite the same extent.

My niece's schoolfriend's dad in the Alsace kept his granddads's SS uniform on a mannequin in his hallway and seemed somewhat taken aback that anyone might take offence at this. That's not normal, is it? :-(
