PS. I'm not seriously suggesting the legendary-yet-mental TA should replace The Great Alsatian

Yeah, genuine hero players rarely make good managers, they say.

That's right, Cruyff was neither a hero player nor a good manager

Yeah, genuine hero players rarely make good managers, they say.

I'd imagine there's some fairly prosaic reasons why that might be the case.

Cruyffs are fairly rare, I think

Absolutely, at least as rare as Beckenbauers, Dalgleishes, Peps, Blancs, Cloughs, Muņozes, Gio Trapattonis, Carlo Ancelottis and Frank Rijkaards

"Genuine hero players", so you can delete most of those, imo. Keep Herr Becks and King Kenny.

Go on then.

I dunno.

Might be because most genuine hero players are sidetracked by other commitments, and the enduring attention that is foisted upon them, after they stop playing. Zidane's immediate post-retirement years seemed to be spent in various ambassadorial roles. For some of them it's probably hard for them to even find the time to do their coaching badges.

Right. I'd only add that the two are completely different occupations and any perceived status a player may have achieved would be mostly lost as soon as they pick up the stop-watch and whistle.

An ex-superstar player is essentially the same as a now elderly former champion top hound in a pack; the next ones in line cannot wait to get rid of him so they can all move up a notch in the hierarchy. Such a chap who fancies management must make his bones, so to speak, all over again and most simply wouldn't be bothered and wouldn't have the necessary talent, skills and luck to fit their reputation, in any case.

His players may very well respect him as a former player, but not necessarily as a current manager.
