Arsene Wenger: Don't rule out an Arsenal title surge... we've done it before
04/04/16 10:48

Arsene Wenger knows a thing or two about late title surges. In 1998, Arsenal won 10 games in succession to pip Manchester United to the Premier League crown.

It would be nice if some of the other teams could help us out a bit.

which show clear examples of managers choosing second string keepers in cup finals, including our own Fabianski in 2014?

unless their priorities lie elsewhere around that time.
Policy and pecking order are secondary to who they feel is the better option on the day.
That's common sense, surely

Or, for that matter, the papers.

If yes please show your workings?

Also talk us through this poor form from Ospina.

Also what about the fact that the last two Champions League Winning teams have played keepers who hardly featured in a league game all season. No team would do that surely.

You had a lesson in that last week ;-)

Sneezy, Fabianski, Mannone, Almunia, Ospina.. All have had spells of indifferent form and were interchangeable depending on who Wenger had more confidence at the time.

As for Ospina. Can you seriously not remember him dropping more than a few clangers at the back end of last season after what was, a promising start ?

choice keeper who played in a cup final. Sorry - you are being a complete :muppet:

Also - can you remind me of these howlers Ospina made. None spring to mind

I remember him getting a lot of stick for this, wouldn't call failing to keep out a point blank header a howler though, nor reason Wenger would drop him

Can you talk me through the others

Not sure what your point was about those CL finals either ?
Neuer was in goal for Munich and Casillas for RM. Pretty safe choices from the managers, I'd say.

You categorically state that no team would play a second choice keeper in a final Casillas did not play a league game in the season he played in the Champions League final - he was clearly second choice
I was wrong about Ter Stegen (I don't recall mentioning Neuer so quite what you are on about there I don't know). He played no league games for Barcelona last season in the league - his four league starts have been this season. He played in the Champions league final without starting a league game for Barca - do you deny he was the club's second choice keeper.

I only use a few examples because it isn't a norm and no one is saying that. Still remains a fact that Wenger for the past two years picked a keeper who wasn't his first choice for the final. You have provided nothing to back up your claim Ospina was dropped, not even an example of a howler

I actually mentioned this when the subject was brought up

Now provide me with an example of a howler before the Cup final

in him wasn't great, the longer he remained in goal.
I'm not trashing his season on the basis of Olympiakos, he just didn't emerge as the definitive number one for the long term, hence the arrival of Chech.

It's time to bow out now though, you've lost any lingering sense of verisimilitude.

I'm always impressed how these chaps have such a forensic knowledge of these matters.
I actually couldn't even tell you who Barca's keeper was without looking him up :hehe:

Szczesny second, as Fabianski was the season before. The Cech signing didn't mean Ospina was "dropped" for the cup final
