If we're going to broaden the discussion so as to include ancient history, people also risked their lives to cross the Berlin Wall and get to the West simply because they wanted better. And, as with now, they are no less impatient for the good life than we are.

They'd all seen Dallas, Miami Vice and MTV and wondered why the f**k they couldn't live like that too; why on earth are we still wearing Russian shoes and waiting in line for months for the right to purchase some rubbish car. Basically, they wanted Levi's 501s and Cortez trainers, Beamers, Benzes, Baywatch and Bruce Springsteen.

Fair enough, but "West Germans" now actually want the wall built back up again, only this time, bigger and better. So far as they are concerned, Re-unification was the beginning of the end. And here we are.

There is a lively bar scene and it is almost impossible to eat badly - something of a rarity in a capital city.

Granted, there are Belgians in the place, but probably not as many as you'd fear. Most people seemed to be Dutch, French or English. Apart from the cab drivers.

In short, 'stinking, wretched cesspit' is rather harsh.
