Any number of writers push the same line: fond recollections of life back in missouri,to be balanced by sharp comments about the more aggressive east coast. Fitzgerald, Sinclair lewis, etc etc.

I liked that franzen has updated it to the late 90s. I'm willig to agree that it's not terribly interesting.
